What is a recipe for good governance? Good governance comes together with transparency, responsibility, accountability, participation, and responsiveness (to the needs of the people). And how does Waste Warriors strengthen its governance? Simply by emphasizing capacity building and fostering collaborative relationships with government stakeholders. Our approach involves imparting expertise in waste management strategies and equipping officials with the tools to formulate and implement impactful regulations.
When we exit a particular location in the future, the communities, which equally include everyone, will be taking forward the operations and our shared values. Our communities are adorned with unsung heroes, silent Warriors who create ripples of change wherever they go. One such inspiring figure is Mahipal Ji, a Municipal supervisor of Muni Ki Reti, who has devoted his life for over 25 years to keeping his city clean. But the past year genuinely challenged and transformed him and his work.
Recalling the past, Mahipal Ji remembers when waste was carelessly mixed, littered, or burnt. However, everything changed when he attended a municipal staff training workshop on streamlining roles and responsibilities. Workshops help the team gain valuable insights through classroom sessions and practical field demonstrations.
The workshop had a profound effect on Mahipal Ji and other team members. He eagerly shared his newfound knowledge and admitted to instructing his team to burn the collected household waste earlier.
Now, armed with a clear understanding of the roles in implementing solid waste management delivery, his team has abandoned such practices under his watchful eye. This became evident after, in Wards 10 and 11, under Mahipal Ji’s leadership, the city’s roadsides underwent a remarkable transformation, which was earlier dispersed with waste.
This is a clear example of good governance, using the ingredients of responsibility, participation, and responsiveness toward a greater cause.
