Enabling Better Governance

in waste management across urban and rural areas,
with a special focus on tourist areas

Going Zero Waste

Most local governments are struggling to manage the increasing volumes of waste being generated in their jurisdiction and are realizing that quick-fix solutions are not sustainable in the long run. We work closely with local governments to help them overcome challenges in setting up effective waste management systems.

Urban Zero Waste Programs

Urban areas generally have existing systems with clear accountability for waste management resting with the Municipal Commissioner in a Municipal Corporation or Executive Office in a Municipal Council. We support the Urban Local Bodies with the following:

  • Monitor and improve the existing collection system.
  • Set up and operationalize appropriate waste processing infrastructure.
  • Training of the waste workers and the employees of the ULBs.
  • Implementation of community engagement and awareness programs.
  • Improved implementation of Swacch Survekshan and SWM rules

Rural Zero Waste Programs

The Himalayan states predominantly have rural populations. Unfortunately, most rural areas do not have any waste collection systems, so people are forced to dump and burn their waste.

Additionally, tourist areas of Uttarakhand & Himachal Pradesh lack the infrastructure required to manage the waste generated by the high footfall during peak seasons, leading to widespread pollution of the local environment.

In rural areas, we work with multiple local, block, district & state-level officials to:

  • Design and initiate waste collection & storage systems, including Waste Banks.
  • Set up & operationalize Material Recovery Facilities through local entrepreneurs.
  • Form Swachhata Samitis to collect user fees, build transparency & monitor operations.
  • Build Capacities of the Village and Block level officials.
  • Facilitate convergence between different government departments.
