The Indian Himalayan Region is one of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes – rich in forests, rivers, wildlife, culture, and community life. Each year, hundreds of millions of tourists travel to Himalayan states, placing immense pressure on fragile ecosystems and local infrastructure.
With an estimated 5–8 million tonnes of waste generated annually in the region, and limited systems to manage it in mountain terrain, the need for responsible tourism has never been greater.

Travelling responsibly doesn’t mean complicated rules or giving up comfort – it’s about making a few mindful choices that reduce waste and respect the places you visit. We know it can be confusing to figure out what that looks like in practice, especially in mountain regions with limited infrastructure.
To make responsible travel easier for you, we’ve created the Good Guest Guide, in collaboration with the Uttarakhand Tourism Department – a simple, practical guide to help you travel thoughtfully in the Himalayas.
A visit to our hubs offers a closer look at waste management in the mountains – from community Waste Banks and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) to the work of Paryavaran Sakhis, local women who lead village collection and awareness. You’ll also find murals and art installations made from waste that spark conversations around responsible travel. Most importantly, you can take away practical ideas to reduce your own travel footprint and share what you learn with others.
